How self watering spikes work
Self watering spikes use capillary action — the same effect that pulls water up a paper towel — to move moisture from a reservoir into the soil at exactly the rate your plant’s roots draw it out. Here’s the whole thing, plainly.

The science, in one paragraph
Dry soil creates suction (matric potential). A cotton wick bridges the reservoir and the soil, and that suction pulls water along the wick’s fibres — capillary action. As roots drink and the soil dries, the pull increases and more water moves across. When soil is already moist, the pull drops and flow slows. The result is self-regulating, deep-root hydration without timers, pumps or electricity.
Because moisture arrives at root level rather than pooling on the surface, plants are encouraged to grow deeper, more resilient root systems — the opposite of the shallow roots you get from frequent light top-watering.
Four steps, then hands-free
Fill the glass reservoir
Pour water in through the spill-free funnel opening. The clear glass lets you see the level at a glance, so you never guess when it is time to refill.
Insert near the plant base
Push the spike into moist soil roughly 50mm from the pot wall, close to the root ball. No repotting and no disturbing established roots.
Capillary action takes over
A natural cotton wick draws water from the reservoir and releases it gradually right at root level — matching the soil’s demand instead of flooding then drought.
Refill every 1.5–2 weeks
Top up when the reservoir runs low. Timing shifts with plant type, pot size, light and room temperature, but most indoor plants go 1.5–2 weeks per fill.
Getting the most from your spike
- Pre-water the soil first. Wicking works fastest when there’s already contact moisture. Water normally when you first insert the spike, then let it maintain the level.
- Match size to pot. Medium suits pots 150mm+; Large suits pots 250mm+ with its bigger 600ml reservoir for thirstier plants.
- Position matters. Keep the spike ~50mm from the pot wall and near the root ball, not jammed against the edge.
- Skip succulents and cacti. Plants that like drying out between drinks don’t suit constant moisture — see the plant guide.
